Storage and on-demand forwarding

The Powder Locker is a storage and forwarding service for ski and snowboard equipment. You can store your equipment with us over the course of the entire season or just between uses. You’ll have the ability to let us know to where you’d like your equipment delivered to and returned from over the course of your subscription. The Powder Locker can serve as the seasonal home base for your equipment.

Once you’ve registered your equipment, we’ll help you get it to us. Once the equipment has arrived at one of our hubs and we’ve checked it in, your subscription will begin. During this time you’ll be able to have the equipment forwarded to the skiing or snowboarding destination of your choosing – on your timeline. A Powder Locker subscription provides an alternative to traveling with your equipment, shipping it yourself, or renting other equipment altogether.

Getting started


Equipment registration

During the online registration and checkout process, you’ll list your items, letting us know whether you’d like to store skis (with or without poles and ski boots) or a snowboard (with or without snowboard boots). We’ll give you the option of shipping your equipment in the box or boxes of your choosing or of receiving one or more boxes (and one or more corresponding shipping labels) from us. You’ll also let us know the address to which you’d like the equipment returned at the end of the subscription period. (You can update this selection over the course of your subscription.)

You’ll select your preferred storage location (either Powder Locker Los Angeles or Powder Locker Louisville; more on this topic in the “Equipment home base” section below), and you’ll let us know whether you’d like for us to send you shipping materials (box materials or shipping labels) for the intake process or whether you’d like to ship the equipment to us with your own materials. (We’re not currently offering the storage of bags, so if you opt to ship your own equipment, please use corrugated cardboard packaging.)

At the moment, subscriptions will be required to end no later than Monday, April 15th. As a result, April 15th will be the default last day of the Subscription Period (and the day on which the Powder Locker team will initiate the return of any stored equipment) unless you and the Powder Locker team explicitly agree otherwise.


Equipment intake

Once we receive your equipment, we’ll confirm what we’ve received. If you verify that we’ve received everything you’ve intended to send and in the condition in which you’ve intended to send it, your subscription will begin. (If you don’t, we’ll return the equipment to you and process a full refund of your subscription fee.)


Subscription charges

We’ll charge the subscription fee monthly (in 28-day increments). You can cancel the subscription at any time and, after the first month, you’ll only pay the subscription fee for the time during which your equipment is stored at a Powder Locker location. We’ll charge separately for any shipments you request over the course of the subscription and for the final shipment at the end of the subscription. By default, we’ll use the return address you select during the registration process as the final return address, but you’ll have the option of letting us know of an alternative return destination. Should you opt to end your subscription before the final billing cycle is complete, we’ll provide a refund for the time during which your equipment was not stored once we’ve been able to successfully return your equipment to you and process any remaining charges. Scheduling delivery of your equipment


Your custom product

Once your equipment is checked in, you’ll have access to your gear as a product listing on powderlocker.com. You’ll be able to signal when you’d like to have access to your gear at a certain destination, and you’ll be able to view shipping-related charges for any combination of destination and dates you like.

We’ll box up and ship your equipment, and we’ll include a return shipping label (or multiple return labels if we’ve shipped your equipment in multiple boxes). You can enjoy the use of your equipment and return it to us when you’re done using it, using the original packaging, from any UPS Store or UPS Access Point (Staples, for example), or from any hotel or other commercial location that is willing to accept a UPS pickup.

We can schedule the pickup by UPS, but we’ll need your cooperation in getting the equipment back to us. We’re not able to take responsibility for your equipment while it’s at your destination.


Transit time and cost

Shipping costs are dynamic over the course of the season, but for your convenience we’ve put together this table of estimated standard (non-expedited) shipping cost ranges and times between each Powder Locker location option (availability-permitting) and different destinations across the country. Please note that this table is built for your convenience and is not a guarantee of future shipping charges. Please anticipate a fee related to handling and/or packaging materials of at least $20. The packaging we use for one or more of your orders will depend upon a number of factors, including the dimensions of your particular equipment.

Please note that we present these estimates in order to help provide a basic sense of shipping costs that may be associated with orders during the Subscription Period and not as a promise of future cost or timing. Shipping timing and cost are subject to change over the course of the season and may differ from what is displayed here. These estimates are based on assumptions of the packaging of skis into a 10 x 6 x 77″ container with a gross weight of 15 pounds, the packaging of a snowboard into an 20 x 8 x 68″ container with a gross weight of 15 pounds, the packaging of ski boots into a 20 x 20 x 8″ container with a gross weight of nine pounds, and the packaging of snowboard boots into a 20 x 16 x 8″ container with a gross weight of five pounds. The estimates assume ground (non-expedited) shipping.


More on transit time and cost

If you place your order by our cutoff time (noon locally at your equipment’s Powder Locker location), we’ll consider it our responsibility to get your equipment to our shipping partner (typically UPS) in time to accommodate your selection of dates and destination. We’ll track your shipment and give you the information to do the same, but because we can’t guarantee that our shipping partner will be able to meet their timing estimate, we recommend selecting, when you place your order, as early a delivery target for which you think you can feasibly support the receiving process at the destination.

By default, when you provide enough notice, we (and our website) will target a delivery date of two business days prior to your first day of use in order to accommodate any prospective delays in transit. If we have enough notice for on-time “ground” (non-expedited) transit to achieve delivery one business day prior to your first playing date, we’ll still default to standard delivery. In such instances, if you’d like to target earlier delivery in order to allow for delays in transit, please select an earlier first date of use. That selection will signal to us that you’d like expedited shipping service.

As with standard (ground) shipping service, when you make this selection you’ll be able to visualize the shipping cost before placing your order.


Equipment “home base”

During the registration process, you’ll select Powder Locker Los Angeles or Powder Locker Louisville as the home base for your equipment. Shipping charges will typically be lower over shorter distances, so if you think you’ll be more likely to use your equipment in the western portion of the country, Powder Locker Los Angeles may be a more cost-effective option, and if you think you’ll be more likely to use your equipment in the eastern portion of the country, Powder Locker Louisville may be a more cost-effective option.

If you’d like to change your home base over the course of your subscription period, please let us know. If we have the space in the location that you didn’t originally select, we may be able to change your home base.


Return of your equipment

Once your subscription period is done, we’ll initiate the return of your equipment to you. If you place an order that is close enough to the end of the subscription period that we estimate the return of the equipment to a Powder Locker hub will be after the close of the period, we’ll notify you of the timing and you’ll only be charged for the one-way shipment. In such a scenario, we can offer a return shipping label that designates a destination other than a Powder Locker location.
